Next, begin to press straight down on the stack of clay with your hand or something flat, like a book. Push straight down, but be careful, it may be difficult! This is called compression, and it happens when rocks are buried and all the weight above them presses down on them.

As you push down more and more, notice what happens: the clay layers mash together and get thinner and wider. Eventually, they’ll be mashed so tightly together that you won’t be able to separate the layers anymore. If this happened to real sedimentary rocks, what do you think the pressure would do to them? It would change them into new kinds of rocks—metamorphic rocks—making them harder, more tightly layered, and might even change the minerals inside the rocks.
